2009 Top Young Trainers Announced
May 04, 2009
Training's second annual list of the best and brightest young stars in the training industry today
By Sarah Boehle
Welcome back to Training's Annual Top Young Trainer (TYT) Awards. Now in its second year, we are again pleased to recognize the outstanding talents, accomplishments, and leadership exhibited by 40 learning professionals age 40 and under.
The young leaders that will be profiled here (and in our May issue) were nominated by their industry peers last December and selected for TYT honors by Training editors and an independent judging panel comprising members of Training's Editorial Advisory Board. Award winners were honored at an awards ceremony on the morning of May 4 during Training's annual Training Leadership Summit, held in San Diego.

Young Trainers to Watch
To qualify, candidates were required to possess a minimum of three years' experience in the training field and manage at least three direct reports or have orchestrated a large-scale training/learning & development initiative requiring management/leadership of a group of people within the last year.
Other criteria included:
• Stellar leadership skills and career progression in an accelerated timeframe
• Success in meeting a difficult training challenge or completing a training turnaround job
• Development of innovative training solutions or programs
• The ability to consistently produce training results
• A demonstrated ability to design training programs that are strategically aligned with the business
• Development of an outstanding training initiative or best practice and its impact on the company
This year's winners include training leaders from the world's biggest, most well-known corporations, as well as those from younger companies looking to make their mark. Some TYTs are building their organizations' training departments from the ground up. Others are managing game-changing restructurings of their companies' learning function. In all cases, they are concentrating relentlessly on harnessing training's power to drive significant, measurable business results.
Here, you'll find in-depth profiles of the Top 10 Young Trainers (listed in alphabetical order), plus shorter profiles of the other 30 Top Young Trainers. And, like last year, we compiled a "10 to Watch" list, which features up-and-coming leaders who didn't receive an award this year, but who are well on their way to becoming future Top Young Trainers.
"This year's Top Young Trainer Award winners demonstrate the incredible degree of professionalism and capability that has emerged in the training and development industry," says TYT judge Nick Schacht, president and CEO of Learning Tree International. "Their focus on achieving concrete results that tie directly to their organizations' business imperatives underscores why training and development has become a key strategic weapon in today's challenging environment."
Adds judge Ross Tartell, director team leader, field training, Pfizer Inc., "This year's nominees are outstanding. They exemplify the drive, expertise, vision, and leadership that will enable them to lead our profession into the future."
