Are You a Corporate Storyteller?

You and your company's managers may not be getting your message across to employees for an unexpected reason—inability to tell a good story. A new book explains why the art of storytelling is relevant to your capacity to persuade employees to do what your company needs to succeed.
In "Corporate Storyteller: A Writing Manual Style Guide for the Brave New Business Leader," business communication specialist Elaine Stirling explains how to communicate with clarity, confidence, and a persuasive style in the workplace.
Fear is the number one frustration encountered by CEO's who attend Stirling's corporate communication workshops, she says. Why? "Fear shuts down our higher centers and forces us to hide behind bullets, Twitter-babble, and fonts too small to see," says Stirling. "The right communication style can foster growth and innovation," she emphasizes, "but what a person can't do with words is hide and persuade at the same time."
The answer? Become a "corporate storyteller," Stirling urges. She says her book teaches learners how to view language, thought, and leadership differently. Points she elaborates on include:
1. Three simple assumptions: Why all people are good, want to do a good job, and are equal.
2. How to create relationship-based communication.
3. Three steps to achieve effective communication: why I'm writing, what you need to know, what I need from you, and when.
4. How to cultivate vitality in your communication.
5. How to rid your communication of the clichés and assumptions of the Industrial Age.
6. How to embrace "the five indispensable talents."
7. How to master "the ten intentions."
"Leadership through communication is like ballroom dancing. If you're the writer or speaker, you're the equivalent of the man," explains Stirling. "What does the female ballroom dancer do? Follow? No, she says. "In relationship-based communication, there are no followers," stresses Stirling. "Our world is in desperate need of brave new leadership. Recognize the brave new leader in you!"
