Productivity Coach's Corner: Who's on Your Team?

Life comes at you faster and faster every day. Decisions, deadlines, and areas of responsibility demand you regularly un-focus from the future, and re-focus on crises, surprises, and unfinished business! As professionals in the learning industry, our options and possibilities are endless.

On any given day, dozens if not hundreds of things grab our focus. Keeping our "eyes on the prize" is not always as easy as we would like it to be. Doing good things takes so much of our time, resources, and focus that we may not always get to do the great things. Here is one way to maintain your attention on The Most Important Things (TMITs):

Peer-to-Peer coaching: Find someone who can help lead your way. Ideally, this will be someone with more experience than you in the area into which you are expanding. Start by drafting a mind-map of all the people who have been influential in your life—before high school and beyond. After five or 10 minutes, you should have a significant inventory of people to contact.

You can find someone inside or out of your immediate organization—a boss, a colleague, or department manager. There may be someone outside with the kind of experience you are looking for—a teacher, a neighbor, or relative. Connect with that person and let them know you are looking to learn more about what they know. However, do not just look from a position of taking.

Part of peer-to-peer coaching is offering something yourself. This just may be the wave of the future: two people, each experienced in their own area, decide to connect and share ideas on a regular basis. So, in your initial contact let them know you're willing to be a resource to them.
