Gadgets & Gear: Coffee to Go
October 26, 2006
Coffeepots are a hotel room standard and Starbucks is ubiquitous, but some may miss the comfort of home-brewed coffee, complete with familiar mug. These portable coffee brewers and presses allow business travelers the pleasure of a do-it-yourself cup on the road. Just bring the coffee.

1.Planetary Design Double Shot French Press Mug

Enjoy coffee or loose-leaf tea with this simple contraption. The combination French press/mug eliminates the need for a separate brewer and cup, and has space for enough ground coffee in its built-in storage compartment for two more cups. Coffee takes four minutes to brew and stays hot for up to two hours. Its 3.5-inch base fits most car cup holders. The Double Shot holds 14 ounces and stands nearly 7 inches tall, and comes in seven colors. $25.99

2. Brookstone Stainless Steel Coffee for One

The complimentary coffee that comes with the hotel-room coffeepot isn't always up to snuff. The compact, silver Coffee for One includes a travel-safe mug with a rubberized base and spill-proof lid that holds 8 ounces of coffee and fits snugly into the machine. Plug in the machine, measure your coffee with the pre-sized scoop, use the mug to pour in cool water, and press the brew button. Coffee comes out in two minutes and the permanent filter just needs a quick rinse before re-use. The drip-style machine weighs less than 3 pounds and the mug is dishwasher safe. $40

3.Velox CoffeeBreak Car

Made in Italy, this automatic espresso machine is exclusively for in-car use. The heavy-duty plastic coffeemaker plugs into a car's cigarette lighter and requires no additional cups or spoons. Add water and espresso-grind coffee to the pre-set markings inside the stainless steel inner core, screw on the top cap and plug it in. Six minutes later, two servings of espresso flow into the twist-off plastic cup on the bottom. Available in blue, red, yellow and black with leather travel case. The clean plastic lining insulates the brewing noise. The CoffeeBreak weighs 2 pounds and is 9 inches tall. $86

4. Preva xSport Portable Espresso Maker

A durable machine made of heavy-duty polycarbonate, the xSport uses a pump mechanism to make a single, 1.5-ounce shot of espresso at a time into a plastic shot glass. At less than a pound, the coffeemaker packs easily and requires only hot water and espresso "pods" weighing less than .25 ounces. The machine also can make eight ounces of drip-style coffee from a pod. The xSport includes a plastic espresso glass, two espresso pods and coffee/espresso filter baskets. Various espresso pod varieties are available at prevacafe.com or gourmet coffee shops. $49.95
