Etón Gets the Word Out
July 07, 2008
Etón's new solar-powered emergency radios combine environmentalism and safety
By Nathan Adkisson

Etón Corporation has announced its Red Cross Radio Line, a group of emergency preparedness products endorsed by the American Red Cross. In times like these, when disasters seem more common and more dangerous than in years past (the Storm Prediction Center has reported more tornados so far in 2008 than it normally expects in an entire year), these items serve as a practical employee gift.

What with blackouts, tornadoes and hurricanes, emergency radios and supplies have become popular enough in the incentive market to be shown at a number of booths at Chicago's Motivation Show over the past few years.

"Products range from $30 to $150 depending on function, and they all fulfill the core function of an "emergency radio," says Jesse Kearney, director of corporate communications for Etón.

Some of the features of the FR150 Microlink include FM/AM radio, seven-channel National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weatherband, cell phone charger and LED light source. It has three possible power sources for the internal rechargeable Ni-MH batteries: a hand-crank generator, solar panels and a USB port. The Solarlink FR500 boasts all of these plus a flashing beacon, emergency siren and alarm clock.

In addition to their practical value, the radios fit two current trends: the green-gadget craze and the "helper's high" movement—the idea that events and promotions involving philanthropy are worthwhile incentives because they increase employee morale and give workers a social bond as a result of their shared charitable experiences.

"Through our partnership, with every purchased radio a donation is made to the Red Cross to help others," Kearney says. "Etón is very committed to helping the American Red Cross with its goal to spread the message of preparedness. Rechargeable batteries and solar powering fit perfectly in the popular 'eco segment.'"

"The product is intended basically for everybody (families, seniors and singles) to have in their home and office," Kearney says. "It's an essential product for safety, like a smoke detector or fire extinguisher."
